Angela Smart is a talented and dedicated musician based in Calgary, renowned for her exceptional skills as both a violinist and pianist. With over a decade of active involvement in the Calgary music and arts community, Angela has left a lasting impact on the local scene. She holds a Master of Music (MMus) and a Bachelor of Music (BMus) with a specialization in violin performance from the prestigious University of Calgary. Throughout her academic journey, Angela demonstrated remarkable talent, serving as concertmaster for the University of Calgary Orchestra and earning the second violin position in the U of C faculty String Quartet. These experiences contributed to her flourishing freelance and teaching career.
Her journey in music is complemented by a diverse background in ballet, providing her with a unique and finely attuned kinesthetic awareness. Angela’s graduate studies were recognized with the prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Grant from the Government of Canada for her research on the convergence of physical movement with violin performance and pedagogy. This research has led to meaningful collaborations with local dance troupes and companies, enriching her artistic expression. As a versatile freelance performer, Angela has graced stages both at home and abroad, participating in various ensembles, including the Bridgeland Quartet, which aims to make classical music more accessible to the public. She also holds the esteemed position of Concertmaster for both the Rocky Mountain Symphony and the Key30Orchestra, an orchestra known for its multicultural fusion and support of local artists.
Angela’s journey in music has been marked by notable milestones, including being a featured performer at the 2023 Calgary Stampede Bell Grandstand Show for the second consecutive year, as well as a memorable appearance at the Canadian Juno Awards alongside distinguished artists Jesse Reyez and Tenille Townes.
Beyond her performances, Angela is deeply passionate about music education and shares her expertise as a certified Royal Conservatory of Music teacher. Since 2014, she has run a successful private music studio in the Calgary area. Her unique background in kinesthetic awareness has made her a sought-after guest lecturer and clinician, invited by private teachers and esteemed music organizations for masterclasses both locally and nationally.
