Joseph Callender is a versatile and accomplished musician from Barbados, now based in Toronto, Canada. A dynamic multi-instrumentalist, music producer, and music educator, Joseph brings over 22 years of experience to the stage and studio, seamlessly blending performance, production, and mentorship.
His musical journey has taken him across genres and borders, earning him performance credits alongside and in support of internationally recognized artists. He has opened for John Legend and shared stages with acclaimed acts such as Lalah Hathaway, Shae Universe, Lillie McCloud, Larnell Lewis, Robi Botos, Kirk Diamond, VanJess, Lila Iké, Bucie, Akua Naru, and Arturo Tappin, among others. These collaborations showcase his musical versatility and his ability to move fluidly across jazz, soul, R&B, reggae, gospel, and Afro-Caribbean styles.
A graduate of Toronto’s renowned Humber College music program, Joseph studied under some of Canada’s most respected jazz musicians, including Pat LaBarbera and Kirk MacDonald. During his time at Humber, he was deeply engaged in performance, recording, and education—actively teaching and mentoring emerging musicians while continuing to expand his own artistic practice.
Beyond his work as a performer and educator, Joseph also manages a busy music production studio in the heart of downtown Toronto. There, he leads recording sessions, produces original compositions, and collaborates with a wide range of artists on projects that span genres and platforms.
With a strong foundation in both Caribbean and North American musical traditions, Joseph Callender has become a respected voice in Toronto’s music scene. His artistry, dedication, and collaborative spirit continue to resonate with audiences and fellow musicians alike.
