Dee Hernandez is a Cuban-born artist based in Atlantic Canada, celebrated for her unique fusion of Cuban roots with R&B, funk, and pop. Her deep love for traditional Cuban music and soul music from the North stems from her upbringing, heavily influenced by her grandmother. Growing up, Dee was immersed in the rhythms of Cuban legends like Celia Cruz and La Lupe while also experiencing the heartfelt melodies of artists such as Nat King Cole and Whitney Houston. This blend of cultural influences shaped Dee’s artistry, allowing her to merge the infectious energy of Cuban rhythms with the depth and emotion of soul music.
Dee’s musical talent has earned her nominations for prestigious awards such as the East Coast Music Award and Music New Brunswick Awards. Supported by CBC regionally and nationally, Dee has captivated audiences with her electrifying live performances and soulful vocals. Renowned artist Sass Jordan described her as a “World Class Jazz Singer,” while Maritime Edit magazine praised her as “The Voice of Cuban-Canadian Jazz.” Celebrated artist Jully Black hailed her as “a win for Music, Culture Music, Black Music, and all the Music in our Country.”
Her music’s cinematic appeal was showcased in the film Do I Know You from Somewhere, featured at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where two singles from her EP were prominently highlighted. Additionally, Dee recorded a children’s song for Fisher-Price at the world-renowned Metalworks Studios and co-wrote with artists like The Moffatt Brothers. Her holiday single was featured in Spill Magazine, while SHIFT Magazine highlighted her as an emerging artist to watch.
