WORLD, WEST AFRICAN, AFRO-CARIBBEAN, HOUSE

Derek Thorne embarked on his percussion journey in 1991, learning congas in Montreal. He honed his skills in Latin and Caribbean percussion under the tutelage of Cuban legend Changuito and Toronto salsa expert Luis Orbegoso. In West Africa, Derek immersed himself in traditional percussion, studying under master drummers Amadou Kienou and Amara Kanté.

Since settling in Toronto in 1998, Derek has become a rhythmic fixture in the city’s music scene. He has lent his talents to various projects, including performing with R&B/funk ensemble The Soul Motivators and sharing the stage with Zaki Ibrahim as the opening act for Erykah Badu at Massey Hall. Derek’s performance resume also includes appearances at prestigious events such as Canadian Music Week, Luminato, and Panamania.

Derek’s musical journey has taken him across North America, Europe, and Malaysia as a member of Canadian calypso ambassador Kobo Town and as a collaborator with calypso legend Calypso Rose, a 2017 Victoires de la Musique (French Grammys) winner. His versatility extends to television appearances, including a notable performance on ET Canada’s New Year’s Eve 2014 with the Sam Roberts Band.
In addition to his live performances, Derek has made significant contributions to various studio recordings. His studio credits include Aline Morales’ JUNO Award-nominated album “Flores, Tambores e Amores” (2012) and Kobo Town’s JUNO-nominated album “Jumbie in the Jukebox” (2013).
